Every once in a while a great idea comes up and you recognize it. Instantly.
Karl Ivester has been a NARI member for a couple years now. As the owner of New England Shutter Mills - a company he founded in 1999 - Karl's success has been built on his connections, his energy, and his commitment to doing things right. So, when Karl said, "I have an idea that would be great for NARI," we listened.
Karl took a winding road to get to his success. He graduated Belmont High School but found his real interest sparked by after school time spent at Minuteman Career and Technical High School in a vocational program. Now, Karl is dedicated to making sure that kids have the opportunity to explore the breadth of career opportunities in the trades. He is frustrated by the "one-size-fits-all" college-bound funnel that exists in schools today. Karl wants to make sure that kids know there are great options in the trades that offer good paying jobs, avoid the debt burden of college, and can lead to career success and, like himself, even business ownership.
Out of that passion, Karl chaired the development of our chapter's first annual Youth Remodeling Career Day. Karl's vision was for a day where students could connect with local remodeling industry leaders, get some hands-on skills and great information, and have a little fun.
Mission accomplished. On Tuesday, October 18th, nearly 500 students attended Youth Remodeling Career Day, hosted by EM NARI, at the Bolton Fairgrounds. At the event, students engaged in interactive building activities, educational expo booths, a speakers series, mini mock interviews and some fun games. Thank you to all our event sponsors, activity and expo booth hosts, our dedicated planning committee and all the volunteers that made the day possible!
Plans are already underway for 2017. Look for a Save the Date and opportunities for your company to get involved early. This event is the perfect way for your company to connect with prospective employees, give back to the community, and connect with fellow EM NARI members.
