“Economically, we see more growth” states Craig Webb, Editor-in-Chief of Remodeling magazine and ProSales magazine, as he shows slides from Metrostudy’s Residential Remodeling Index showing that the overall expenditures on remodeling are currently higher than in the peak during 2007. His slide shows a steady projection of growth through Q3 2020. And, according to the Harvard Joint Center for Housing Studies, the areas with some of the highest projected rates of growth are metro areas along the northern Atlantic region of the United States.
Webb says when you pair the growth rates with recent natural disasters, be prepared for pricing increases. One of the biggest concerns facing our industry, Webb suggests, is being overworked. Business owners will be stretched thin, and workers are in short supply. Unemployment is at a tremendous low, and start up construction companies are approaching the same levels as 2007. This is creating an average (and growing) backlog of 7.1 weeks for General Contractors/Remodelers, and close to 8 weeks for Design-Build companies.
As new companies are popping up, demand is increasing, and quality help is becoming more precious, Webb shared some advice for retaining and continuing to build strong organizations. Company culture, and the benefits a company offers, are increasingly relevant to career carpenters and trades people. Company culture, says Webb, has never been more important.

Kathy DeMeyer, EM NARI President, took time to thank Dave Supple for his service to EM NARI. During his time on the Board, Dave led the Membership Committee, the Education Committee, served as chapter President in 2016, and Chairman in 2017. Dave's energy and passion for EM NARI will be missed!
