CotY Then and Now

EM NARI 20 Years Ago!

So this was supposed to be an article about CotY, and then this happened…

Last Friday we enjoyed a full day of education with 60 local remodeling contractors at The Remodelers Conference. The day kicked off with a business presentation by Roger Gallagher. At some point later in the day, Roger pulled me aside and produced a copy of the EM NARI Directory from 1998 he found when cleaning out files in his office. I think he was a little puzzled by how excited I was to get this.

Remember 1998? We were all worried about our Palm Pilots no longer working after Y2K. We would never be able to find the information again because Google didn’t exist – as a company, let alone a verb. But some things haven’t changed too much in 20 years. Our EM NARI chapter was here – working hard to advance quality in the remodeling industry by educating and connecting contractors. We offered NARI certifications, worked in service projects to serve the community, and yes – we presented CotY Awards!

Back in 1998, EM NARI Contractor of the Year (CotY) Awards were offered in 12 categories (there are 20 today).  Then, as now, NARI members competed not only to earn the distinction of being a CotY winner, but also because the process created synergy and pride among their staff, and helped them continually improve their craft.

Check out the CotY coverage in the 1998 directory:
